Throughout Southeast Asia I repeatedly saw people, old and young, squatting on their haunches. I gave it a try and couldn’t hold the position for more than a minute before my knees started to hurt. I guess it’s something you need to learn from an early age. When I was in Luang Prabang, Laos, I spent a day trekking near the the Mekong river. I was able to visit several small and rural Hmong villages. I spotted this kid, who couldn’t have been more than two, squatting like it was second nature. Gotta love the painted fingernail and stickers on his feet.
